Common questions about checkout consent

How do I force customers to accept terms and conditions before checkout on Shopify?

Install ConsentGuard, create a required consent block (checkbox, banner, or acknowledgment), then add ConsentGuard to your cart page in the theme editor. No code required. With enforcement turned on, Shopify won't let the customer complete the order until they tick it. On Shopify Plus, blocks can render inside checkout instead.

How can I prove a customer agreed to my terms in a chargeback or dispute?

ConsentGuard logs every order's consent with a timestamped snapshot of the exact terms text the customer saw at checkout. The log is filterable and exportable to CSV, so you have a defensible record to submit as evidence when a customer disputes a charge or claims they didn't agree to a final-sale or no-refund policy.

How long is consent evidence kept, and does that cover the dispute window?

The Free plan keeps 30 days of consent history; Pro keeps 365 days. Chargebacks commonly arrive 30 to 120 days after an order, and some card network reason codes allow longer, so the Pro retention window is sized to outlast a typical dispute. ConsentGuard warns you in the admin before any records reach the end of your retention period, so you can export them first.

Is ConsentGuard a cookie-consent (GDPR) banner or an age-verification app?

No. ConsentGuard is a checkout terms-acceptance and consent-logging app. It records agreement to your policies — terms of service, final-sale, waivers, or age-acknowledgment for restricted goods — and can require that agreement before checkout completes. It does not manage cookie/GDPR consent banners and does not perform ID- or date-of-birth-based age verification; it records the customer's acknowledgment of the terms you present.

How does ConsentGuard add consent to Shopify checkout?

ConsentGuard renders the consent block on your cart page using a Shopify theme app block, which you add once in the theme editor — no code required. Enforcement runs server-side through a Shopify validation function, so it covers every checkout path including Shop Pay, Apple Pay, and Buy it now. On Shopify Plus you can additionally render consent inside the checkout page using Checkout UI Extensions.

Does ConsentGuard slow down checkout?

No. ConsentGuard uses a metafield-based architecture that delivers consent block configuration with zero network latency. The checkout extension reads data from a pre-synced shop metafield, eliminating any API calls during the checkout flow.

Can I require consent before checkout completion?

Yes. With enforcement enabled, blocks marked “required” prevent checkout completion until the customer accepts. This is enforced server-side by a Shopify cart and checkout validation function, so it cannot be bypassed by disabling JavaScript. Note that buyers using accelerated checkout buttons such as “Buy it now” skip the cart page entirely.

How does the audit log prove what customers agreed to?

ConsentGuard records a point-in-time text snapshot of the exact consent text shown to each customer at the moment of checkout, along with the order ID, timestamp, locale, and acceptance status. Even if you later edit the consent text, the audit record preserves what the customer actually saw.

Can I show different consent blocks for different products?

Yes. With the Pro plan and above, you can set display rules based on product tags, product types, or date ranges. For example, show an age-acknowledgment checkbox only when the cart contains products tagged “alcohol”, or show a seasonal return policy during holiday months.

Does ConsentGuard support multiple languages?

Yes. You can add translations for any locale. The checkout extension automatically detects the customer's checkout language and displays the matching translation. If no translation exists for that locale, it falls back to your default language.

Is ConsentGuard suitable for GDPR compliance?

ConsentGuard is designed for compliance use cases including GDPR consent collection. It provides explicit opt-in checkboxes, records the exact text shown, timestamps every consent event, and offers configurable data retention periods. Compliance ultimately depends on your specific legal requirements and how you configure the consent text.
